CYCLE TOURING
GROWING IN POPULARITY. One of the most significant developments in recreation in America has been the increase in popularity of cycle touring. Bicycle sales have mounted into astonishingly high figures in the States and cities are setting aside bicycle trails in their parks. It is interesting, therefore, to note a growing interest in cycle touring in New Zealand. The recreation officers of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Branch have found a ready response to their efforts to interest girls in this sport. It is very cheap and gives one independence of travel. Our present Speaker, Mr Barnard, has taken an annual cycle tour for many years past.
By forming clubs of girl cycle tourists, the social side of this sport has been enhanced. Some cities, of course, are better suited than others. Wellington, where this development is being pioneered, is well provided with local cycle trips and some outstanding outings have been held by combined girls' clubs in this area. It is proposed to extend this movement throughout the Dominion.
