SOLWAY-MANAIA ANNUAL MEETING. 4 PROGRAMME FOR APRIL. The annual meeting of the SolwayManaia Women's Institute was held on Thursday. In the absence of the president, Mrs. Scrivener occupied the chair and extended a welcome to all members and visitors. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Crewe, Catherall, junr.. Reynolds, Munn and Miss Billington. Mrs. Henderson read the annual report showing the splendid work of the Institute during the past year. Both Mrs. Henderson (secretary) and Mrs. Woollett (treasurer) were complimented on their services. Thanks were accorded to Miss Grace Russell, Mrs. Groombridge and Mrs. D. McLeish for the manner in which they had carried out their duties during the past several years. During the afternoon, two wall competitions were held, both being won by Mrs. McLeish. Mrs. K. McGovern contributed a reading from “Tales of Pioneer Women.” The election of officers for the coming year was attended with interest, Mrs. Munn being returned as president with the following committee: Mesdames Cornick, Church, Groombridge, Henderson (secretary), McGovern, Scrivener, Woollett, Reynolds, Whittaker and Miss Russell. For their services as scrutineers, Mesdames Taylforth and Keir were accorded a vote of thanks and presented with shoulder sprays. Competition results were as follow: Aster: Mrs. Catton 1 and 2, Mrs. Scrivener 3; best bloom, Mrs Sutherland 1. Mrs. Catherall 2; zinnia, Mrs. Henderson 1; centennial needlework, Mrs. Catton 1, Miss Russell 2; rock cakes. Mrs. Sutherland . junr., 1, Mrs. Catton 2. The programme for April will be: Sewing: A knitting bag. Cooking: (1> Rice buns. (2) sponge sandwich. Flowers: (1) Best chrysanthemum, (2) best bloom. Roll call: Recollections of first motor car. Hostesses: Mesdames Catherall, Catton, Groombridge and McLeish. MATARAWA-DALEFIELD. LARGE ATTENDANCE AT ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Institute was held on Wednesday, there being a good attendance of members. Owing to the illness of the president, Mrs Ross Gallon, Miss Wolters, assisted by Mrs Callister. presided. Mrs Joblin, president of the Wairarapa Federation, sent birthday greetings and good wishes for the coming year. Greetings were also received from Dyerville, Kahutara, SolwayManaia, Upper Plain, Mt. Bruce and Kopuaranga Institutes, whilst telegrams were received from Mrs Parker, Mrs Burgess and Mrs Brazendale, members who were on holiday when the function was held. The annual report and balance sheet was adopted, this disclosing a very successful year. A large number of nominations came forward for the committee, and the election resulted as follows: —President, Mrs L. Rogers; vice-presidents, Mrs Ross Gallon and Mrs R. Callister; non. secretary, Mrs H. Bain; hon. treasurer, Miss J. Knowles; committee, Mrs F. Groube, Mrs R. J. Gallon. Mrs W. Ticehurst, Mrs E. G .Knowles, Mrs W. Nielsen and Mrs G. Brazendale. All members who entered for the potato growing competition were reminded to take* their entries to the April meeting. Mesdames E. Ordish, W. Knowles and M. Knowles were elected new members. The next meeting will be held in the Dalefield Hall, while the meetings from May until September will be held in the Matarawa schoolroom. Mrs Groube and Mrs Rogers were appointed delegates to attend the Federation meeting to be held in Masterton in April. During the afternoon Miss Sutherland, of Wairarapa College, representing the Citizens’ Committee for combined efforts of the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army, spoke on behalf of that appeal, members promising support for the shop day to be held in Carterton on March 15, and also arranging a canvass of the district. Competitions for the April meeting were decided as follow: —Knitted scarf suitable for men serving in the Air Force, and presentation, box of Howers. The retiring, president and hon. secretary thanked all members for their willing help during the past year, special mention being made of the Drama Circle members. Votes of thanks were also passed to Mrs H. Bain for her supervision of the competitions during the year, and Mrs Bain and Mrs Rogers who had assisted at the piano. Mrs Hodder, Mrs Hicks, Miss Knowles and Mrs D. Knutson were appointed hostesses for the next meeting. The competitions, judged by Mrs Trapp and Mrs Gayfer. of Carterton. resulted as follow:—Best bloom: Mrs L. Parker 1. Mrs L. Rogers 2, Mrs S. Gallon 3. Three date scones: Mrs O. Brazendale 1, Mrs D. Knutson. 2, Mrs Robert Gallon 3. A vote of thanks was accorded Miss Wolters, Mrs Trapp and Mrs Gayfer for their willing assistance, and they were each presented with a shoulder spray. Shoulder sprays were also presented to Mrs Callister, Miss Sutherland. Mrs Rogers and Mrs H. Bain. UPPER PLAIN. READING AND DEMONSTRATION. The monthly meeting of the Upper Plain Women's Institute was held recently. There was a very good attendance of members. Mrs G. Dagg presided. The meeting opened with the aspirations. Mrs Mannell read a story from a book of pioneer tales about the early days of Tinui. The account was listened to with keen interest. The roll call for jam-making hints brought forth some very useful suggestions. During the afternoon Mrs C. R. Jones gave a demonstration on the making of rucked satin cushions, which proved most interesting. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competitions were won as follow: Seed work. Mrs Mannell 1, Mrs C. R. Jones 2; best bloom, Miss B. Payne 1. Mrs Jones 2; coffee sponge, Mrs .W. Ta pl in 1. A pleasant afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
