The travelling library for rural schools —the only one of its kind in New Zealand—has just entered upon its fifth vear of library service to the country children of Canterbury and Westland. During last year over 12 thousand books were issued, and the v library now contains close on seven thousand volumes, including many finely bound and beautifully printed and illustrated books specially indented from abroad. The success of the service, states the "Education Gazette." depends very largely upon the enthusiasm and co-operation of the teachers. Where the teachers are keen, the pupils are keen. The amount of subscription is 2s 6d per head per annum for the pupils in Standards 111, IV. V and VI. and may be paid by the pupils or the school committee.
