Martara is a six-year-old gelding by Martarma from Tarahcke. by Paladin from Flower of the West, by Arizona, and he was secured for India when a Ihrce-year-old by the Australian, A. Higgins, for whom he has been a good performer. The New Zealand horses IVloorsotis and Fils de Vaals, who are on their way to India, have also been acquired by Higgins, who has a very large team of horses in training.

Setting a Main. When Machine Gun won the Great Easter as a four-year-old under 10.4 he set a main that still stands unequalled. Penates won with 9.3 five years later, and Grand Knight with 9.3 in 192 G, but since 1905 Machine Gun's year, the only other-winner to carry over nine’ stone was Reremoana, who won under 9.9 in 1928. Encouraging Opinion. Defaulter was examined by a veterinary surgeon on Monday, and in his opinion the horse, if given a light season at the stud, will overcome all of his ligament trouble and may come back thoroughly sound. This course is to be followed, and there is thus a possibility that Defaulter may be seen again under silk. In the meantime ho is to bo spoiled at Mr K. Austin’s stud at Kaiapoi. Young Sire's Success. Very few of Croupier's stock have yet raced, but in their deeds to date they look Fke proving very useful gallopers. At meetings held recently there were two further winners by this Surveyor stallion. The Raker, nt Dunedin, end Tavoy. nt Woodville. The oldest el' the Croupiers are now three yit.rs. The throe of this age who have raced are Counter. The Raker, and Tavoy. and each has: been a winner. Only two Croupier two-year-olds have yet made an appearance this season, and Kudina has already won, while the other. Croupisino. is spelling till next season after having had ttvo starts at Christmas. Croupier was not much used in his two first, seasons at the stud, but is likely to have more chances in coming years. Veteran Kairuri. A recent addition to W. J. McLean's team at Ellerslie is the 1---year-old gelc'.’iig Kairuri. After an absence from racing for six years. Kairuri. who is by Surveyor from Salvor, made his reappearance in the Waiuku Hack Handicap at Pukekohc on Saturday. A winner over ..hurdles. Kairuri is at an ago when he will find it difficult to succeed against younger opponents.

South Canterbury Meeting. At a meeting of the committee of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, a programme was adopted for the autumn meeting to be held on April 27. The sum of £ 1293 was allocated in stakes. Last year a two-day meeting was hold in A.pril and the average prize-money a day was £ 1277. The programme for the two-day meeting in May was also arranged. The distance of the Electric Stakes, to be run at the meeting next month, has been increased from five furlongs to six. to avoid the start being made near a bend.
