CARTERTON BATHS (To the Editor.) Sir. —The question of changing ’he site of the Carterton swimming baths from the present convenient site to a new position in Holloway Street is exercising the minds of those who ate regular attendants at the present bates and also many other residents of the borough. The question is being asked why is it necessary to go away from the'site that has been in use for thirty years? Moreover, visitors who haw come to our present baths ‘ unanimously passed the remark: "What a wonderful asset Carterton has, in such a splendid swimming pool.” In fact. Carterton’s baths have always been the envy of visiting competitors fat aquatic sports held in Cartertin. As a resident of 60 years and a regmai attendant at the Carterton Swimming Club's sports, it seems to me to be so much folly even to think of moving away from the present site, the bogey has been put tip that the ia..way is dangerous to lite. During the whole of 30 years can anyone point to a single drawback insofar as the railwav is concerned? It the decision is to shift the baths, what is going to be done with the present site. Has it occurred to the powers that be that it is going to cost money to fill the old site in as well as the. cost of excavating the new one? Then again, all the appointments are tlready on the present site and with a little improvement could be made equal to those of any inland baths in New Zealand. 1 understand no arrangements have been made for a paddling pool for small children at ’he new site. Even if it is contemplated to make one, extra expense will be incurred. when it could be marie far more conveniently on the present site
The proposed Memorial Gales, it has been said, would be wasted il placed on the Pembroke Street site, but would be more imposing if played in Holloway Street. What bosh. Regarding the bogey of a dangerous railway’ crossing, it appears that Holloway Street would be more dangerous as regards motor traffic, which it is presumed would become congested in a short street. Many residents are becoming uneasy about the removal of the site and it is suggested that a further meeting be called by the Mayor of residents for them to say definitely' where the baths should be located.
Another matter that needs consideration is whether it is wise to erect baths in the vicinity of trees, as this would mean a constant nuisance of leaves being blown into the swimming pool. At the present site there is no such nuisance. —Yours, etc.. INTERESTED. Carterton. March 4.
