CHILDREN BENEFIT
UNDER EVACUATION SCHEME IN BRITAIN IMPROVEMENT IN LIVING CONDITIONS. ILLUMINATION OF MANY LIVES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. March 5. lii.lrodiicino- the estiiual’es for I he Ministry of Education in I lie House of Commons today, the I'arliamentary Secretary io the Hoard of Eduealion, Sir Kenneth Lindsay, discussed some of the problems and merits of the evaeiitien of school children. “Whereas at the outset we regarded, evacuation merely as a necessary nuisance, we find it has meant an illumination in the lives of many thousands of urban children," he said. "Thus, what started as an accident may well be continued as a policy.”
In the past six months, he continued, it had been discovered that the minds, manners, outlook, and physique of the evacuated children had changed. The testimony of the inspectors was unanimous on that point. The regular meals, wholesome food, long’hours of quiet sleep, and fresh air which the child could only receive in the countryside were some of the reasons which helped to explain this fact. In the debate that ensued Sir Kenneth Lindsay revealed that in the reception areas 95 to 97 per cent of the children were enjoying full education.
