OBITUARY
PROFESSOR HUGH MACKENZIE LONG SERVICE AT VICTORIA COLLEGE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The death is announced of Professor Hugh MacKenzie, one of the four foundation professors of Victoria University College, and a member of the professorial staff from 1899 to 1936.
The late Professor MacKenzie. long a familiar and respected figure in Wellington. was born at Ardross, Rossshire, on May 2. 1861. lie was a halfbrother of the kite Sir John MacKenzie, a former New Zealand Minister of Lands. He entered St Andrew's University in 1881. His record included: First rank honours and prizeman in rhetoric and English literature. 1831-82: ditto logic and metaphysics 1883-84; in theory, history and practice of education 1885-36: M.A., 1886; studied literature and philosophy for three years, after graduating under Professors Thomas Spencer Baynes and Seth P. Pattison; honours in advanced logic and metaphysics 1889. The late Professor MacKenzie lived in St Andrews for 17 years, engaged in tutorial and journalistic work. He was later an assistant master at St Salvator’s private school and was tutor to the Marquis of Bute when he was appointed to the Victoria College Skill' in 1899.
