FEDERAL CRISIS
POSSIBLE AS RESULT OF BYELECTION STIR IN PARTY' CIRCLES. MR MENZIES SAYS GOVERNMENT WILL GO AHEAD. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY. March 4. There is a good deal of speculation in the newspapers on the possibility of a political crisis as a result ol the Federal Goveriinieiil’s loss of the Corio (Victoria) seat to Labour at the weekend. This is the third seal the Government has lost in success! ve by-eleei ions. The Federal Labour leader, Mr Curtin, today called upon the Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, “to pay respect to this most significant decision in a test electorate of his own choosing.” The Country Party leader, Mr Cameron, who is also critical of the Menzies leadership, will attend a meeting of the Federal Country Party in Sydney tonight, when its relations with the United Australia Party will be reviewed. Mr Menzies, when interviewed in Melbourne today, declared that the Government intended to go ahead with ils war policy, despite its critics.
POSSIBLE COALITION MESSRS MENZIES & CAMERON TO MEET. PROSPECTS OF AGREEMENT NOT BRIGHT. (Received This Day, 11 a.m.) SYDNEY. March 4. The leader of the Federal Country Party, Mr Cameron, will meet Mr R. G. Menzies (Federal Premier) in Melbourne on Thursday to discuss the possibility of forming a composite Ministry. The Country Party has approved of Mr Cameron discussing an alliance with the United Australia Party. The “Herald” says: “ In spite of this decision the prospects of the two leaders reaching an arrangement are not bright. It is stated authoritatively that Mr Cameron, in light of the result of the Corio by-election, will take an uncompromising stand?
