Mollison. with £17.343. holds the record for a two-year-old.
Retired. A northern report states that J. Olsen has retired from training and at a send-oft by Hastings trainers was presented with a cheque as a mark of esteem. Olsen formerly rode in Otago and Southland with considerable success. He won the Dunedin Cup on Flora Macdonald and Bee. the Birthday Handicap on Rorke’s Drift, the Riverton Cup on Coo-ee. and the Timrru Cup on Tirolc. Rakahanga. Rakahanga, who won a double al Woodville, has always been able io produce a good dash of speed when at her best. She won three times and was six times placed out of 12 starts as a two-year-old. Last season she won three times including the Avon Handicap at Riccarton. and Ihe Telegraph Handicap at Trentham. She started nine times this season prior to Woodville without scoring a win. Rakahanga is now live years old, and was got by Gascony from Mori, by Tea Tray—Hula Girl, by Demosthenes— Rangiao. oy Gold Reef. Santoft. Santoft, who has been nominated for the Great Western Steeplechase, won the event in 1937. He then went on to Trentham and won the Wellington Steeplechase and was oft the scene again until the following winter, when he signalised his return by winning the Pareora Steeplechase at Washdyke. He followed this up with a second in the Wellington Steeplechase to Erination, and. after running unplaced in the Grand National Steeplechase at his next start, he acted as runner-up again to Erination in the Lincoln Steeplechase. He has not raced since and is now 11 years old.
Returning to Form. Full o' Scotch, the Raccful gelding, winner of the hurdle race at To Aroha last week, was in the limelight two seasons back. He won three hack hurdle events in succession at Ellerslie and came south to win the Trentham Hurdles and to run second in the Winter Hurdles. Last season, however, lie failed to touch the money, and he has just resumed operations for the current term.
SIDELIGHTS ON BREEDING PERFORMANCES AT WOODVII.I E. RICCARTON DUEL REVIVED. Interesting sidelights on brooding I were brought out by some of the winners at Woodville, states a turf commentator. A most interesting runner was Tavoi, winner of the maiden event on the second day. Tavoi :'s a nicely furnished rich chestnut three-year-old filly by the New Zea-land-bred sire Croupier, from Tavora. a member of a family which Mr G. F. Moore fostered, mid which produced good horses. Not only is Croupier New Zealand bred, but so also is his sire. Surveyor, New Zealand-bred sires c.’o not get the stud chances some of them deserve, but in spite of this they are doing much to remove the prejudice against them. Pellet, the dam of Croupier, was a Thurnham mare nut of Pell, who was by Hymettus (sire of Gold Light. Hymestra. and others), cut of Pellicule by Birkenhead. Pelham, winner of the Douro Cup. was one of the family. Through his dam. Tavora. Tavoi is directly related to Reremoana, one of the best horses of his time, and among the best milers New Zealand has had. Tavora was sired by Pombal from Valerie, a sister ui Reremoana. Valerie's sire, Hallowmas, was by Martagon, the sire of Martian, one of Now Zealand's most famous begetters of stayers. Her dam. Bonny Portland, was by Bonil'orm from Helen Portland, dam of the New Zealand Oaks winner, Bonny Helen. Tavoi resembles Croupier and is a nice galloper. Her Woodville win. though impressive, was not a good test, as the held was exceptionally weak. Nevertheless breeding and appearance suggest that Tavoi will be heard of again. Those who remember the desperate finish in the Groat Autumn Handicap, ct 1927, when a very game little marc. Piuthair, fought a terrific duel down the straight, with Footfall, and finally worried him out of the decision, will be interested in Gaelic Song, a five-year-old black mare, who ran a first and a second at the meeting. Gaelic Song, by Hunting Song, is a daughter of Piuthair. She has not done much racing, and seems useful. Piuthair won a number of good races for Mr R. A. McKenzie, and prior to winning the Great Autumn had won the Egmont Cup, the Taranaki Cup, and the Wanganui Cup in successive weeks. Mooradabad, winner of the Maiden Plate on the first day. is a member of the family founded in New Zealand by Hebrew Maid, which, as I have pointed out previously, is one of the greatest in our stud book. She is a throe-year-old filly by Bulandshar from Liaison, and is a half-sister to Old Bill, Quadroon, and Florence Mills. Her ancestress. Hebrew Maid, was the dam of Lovelorn, who. in association with Martian, produced Nones, Menelaus (New Zealand Cup). Lovematch (dam ct the Auckland Cup winner, Motere), Left (dam of Peter Jackson, Gaine Carrington, and the Melbourne Cup winner. Wotan), and Dominant (dam of Now Zealand's best thrcc-ycar-old. Beau Vito).
From a Great Family. Simper. the great-granddam of Sparkle, cost Mr’W. T. Hazlett 1.100 guineas, and it is estimated that her progeny have won about .£30,000 in stakes. When Mr Hazlett purchased her she was in foal to Hymettus. and that foal. Gold Light, proved herself one of the best mares ever bred in the Dominion. She won £12.218 in stakes. Razzle Dazzle, who at three years old beat Gloaming in fife Challenge Stakes at Riccarton in Jmin. 24 4-ssecs., was Simper’s next foal, and then followed Beacon Light, another great racehorse, but unfortunately unsound. Her last foal. Sir Simper, was unlucky not to win the Caulfield Cup. Lambent, the dam of Sparkle, was the first foal of Dazzling Light, a daughter of Kilbroney and Simper, and is another of Tractor’s progeny that is breeding well. RACING FIXTURES March 7. 9—Taranaki.
