SOCIAL EVENING

ST MATTHEW’S PARISHIONERS. One of the happiest social evenings ever held in St Matthew’s Parish Hall took place last even when the St Matthew’s Ladies' Guild, Choir, Sunday School teachers and C.E.M.S. tendered a parish gift social to Miss L. Armstrong and the Rev V. W. Joblin, whose marriage takes place shortly. The large attendance of parishioners and the many gifts received, which included an afternoon tea set from the choir, were a striking tribute to the esteem in which the guests of honour are held by all connected with St Matthew's parish. An excellent programme had been arranged by Misses R. Robinson and G. Gaudin. Musical and elocutionary items were interspersed with novel games. Items were contributed, by Mr and Mrs Miller Hope, pianoforte duet; Mrs Moss, vocal solo; Miss E. Thomas, recitation; Rev H. Taepa, vocal solo; Misses Robinson and Gaudin, vocal duet.

Many parishioners accompanied their gifts with an original verse or poem appropriate to the occasion, and the reading of these was appreciated by all present. In presenting a special gift from the Vestry. Mr .1. Ninnes. People's Churchwarden. paid a tribute to tire young couple and conveyed to them the sincere good wishes of everybody in the parish. The Rev V. W. Joblin suitably responded. Supper was served by the Ladies’ Guild.
