SALVATION ARMY LEADER
NEW APPOINTEE ARRIVES. (By Telegraph—Press Asociation.) AUCKLAND, March 3. Lieutenant-Commissioner J. Evan Smith has arrived from England to take charge of the work of the Salvation Army in New Zealand. He is accompanied by his wife and son. Saying he was delighted with his New Zealand appointment, LieutenantCommissioner Smith recalled with pleasure the visits he had made to the dominion in 1920 and 1924 in company with General Bramwell Booth. “I want to lead the Salvation Army here in virile evangelism,” he said. “It seerps to me that the time is ripe for the rebirth of a spiritual and religious life which would remould society in a way that no less potent force could do. The army's business is to make the people realise that the religion of Lord Jesus Christ will achieve greater results than the doctrines of Nazism, Fascism and Communism.” For many years Lieutenant-Commis-sioner Smith, was private secretary to General Bramwell Booth. He later became chief secretary for the army in South Africa and for the past three years and a half has been territorial commander for Wales and the Western territories.
