SPARKLE’S BREEDING

DESCENDANT OF FAMOUS MARE. Sparkle is a descendant of the famous Symington mare Simper, one of the most successful mares in the New Zealand Stud Book during the last two decades. Simper was imported from England in 1914 by the late Mr J. B. Reid, who secured her there as a two-year-old for the stud, and, bought by Mr W. T. Hazlett after foaling Affectation and Illume, she became the stoutest foundation in Mr Hazlett’s stud. Mr Hazlett raced Illume and all Simper’s subsequent progeny, including Gold Light. Razzle Dazzle. Beacon Light. Ruling Light, and Sir Simper, who was her last foal. Sparkle thus has a wholly English pedigree. She is out of Lambent. who was by Tractor out of Dazzling Light one of Simper’s Kilbroney daughters and a full-sister to Affectation and Razzle Dazzle. Razzle Dazzle was the best of her year, and she won stakes amounting to £BOOO in two seasons on the turf, though she has been a failure since at the stud. Affectation was also a highclass performer, winning the Wanganui Guineas. C.J.C. Steward's Handicap, and W.R.C. Shorts Handicap among other races and also! nearly £BOOO in stakes. Gold Light.: who was by Hymettus. was the greatest of all Simper’s offspring, a remarkable weight-carrying mare and the winner of over £12.000 in stakes. Beacon Light. Speed Light. Ruling Light, and Sir Simper also succeeded in the best company, the first paii' notable handicappers. Lambent herself was only lightly raced, .and her only progeny yet to grace the Turf are Sparkle and Lady. Cygnus. Sparkle's sire. Colonel Cygnus. was imported by Mr J. M. Samson from Ireland eight or nine years ago with several other yearlings. He is a son of the Sunstar horse Cygnus, sire of winners of over £30,000 in England and Ireland, and he goes back directly Io a daughter of Musket, incorporating in this side of his pedigree the much-sought Musket-St. Simon cross. The Musket mare referred to (Sonsic Queen) is also ancestress of the English Derby winner Camcronian, and also of Cooltrim, a successful Australia)' sire. When raced in the Dominion Colonel Cygnus won a number of races, including three events over a mile and a-quartcr. At a sale of Mr Samson's stud a few years ago lie was bought as a likely stallion by Mr W. F. Hazlett for 110 guineas, and already lie has proved himself a stud bargain at the price. His oldest slock are now five years old. Sparkle being one of his first crop, and several of them have been winners, while there is considerable promise in many of the younger generation. ,
