RACING IN ENGLAND ENTRIES FOR DERBY; By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON. March 1. Seventy-eight entries have been received for the Derby. The prize will probably be £6OOO. compared with, £lO.OOO last year. ENGLISH FILLY CROSS ROSE BRED ON BEST LINES. Favourite for the Trial Stakes at the Winton meeting was Cross Rose,- a name that, was a. conundrum to’ racegoers, says a Southern writer. Cross Rose ran unplaced.' but such confidencemust obviously have had some foundation. It' is little wonder-that few- should have - known who Cross Rose- was. Not only was she making her debut, but she is . an English filly who has been imported-to the Dominion by Mrs M. J. Irving of Albury, South Canterbury. She was located for a time after her arrival at the Elderslie Stud. Foaled in 1936-to English time, Cross ißose- now figures as a four-year-old. She is-a grey mare by'the-French bred Teddy' horse Ximenes, and- is- out of Rosalie; by Mantomas, from Orena; by Orpiment from’ Soligena,. by Soldernis. It is the' Bruce Lowe No 4- family, and the branch to which Cross Rose belongs is that which produce Coronach, win-ner-of the Derby and St.Leger for the' late Lord Woolavington in 1926. Coronach was from Wet Kiss, who was another daughter of Soligena. Further back the line has also been responsible for such good English performers as Sir Visto, Bona Vista, and Ellangowan. Cross Rose was bred by Sir James D.J Roberts,- from whom she was purchased for export to the Dominion.
JOCKEY’S PREMIERSHIP LEADERS BEING OVERHAULED. Although they-have not yet been displaced, the leading jockeys, H. N. Wiggins and W. J. Broughton, who are at present serving' terms of suspension, are being- rapidly overhauled in the jockeys’ premiership for the season and the position is now becoming open. The' most serious challenger is B, H. Morris who is'riclirrg'in fine-form, and-hasac-tually drawn level with Broughton. P. Atkins retains his position, but is being closely'followed by W. J. Murford and G. R. Tattersall.' who have advanced considerably during'the last two weeks, with the addition of-six wins each. . Following is the present position among the most successful jockeys:— .Hi ■N. Wiggins 40 W. J.’ Broughton 33* B. H. Morris 33 P.- Atkins .... 27 W. J. Mudford 25- - G. R. Tattersall' 25' P.
