GREYTOWN

GUNNER OF ACHILLES VISITING HOME ON LEAVE. ("Times-Age" Special.) Gunner Norris Maidment, son of Mr A. Maidment, of Greytown, who is a member of the H.M.S. Achilles, has arrived in Greytown on leave. He has many interesting episodes to tell of the engagement with the Graf Spee. He considered that the strain of waiting was much harder on the nerves than the actual engagement itself. During the battle, the gun which he was operating from the turret was fired at the rate of three shots per minute for two hours, and the heat was such that the paint was burnt off it. He is looking very fit and well. Personal. Mr F. Shanley, of Wellington, is spending a holiday with Mrs Shanley. Senr, Main Street. Mr and Mrs R. G. Vile leave today for a holiday to be spent at New Plymouth. Mr F. Dennes is at present in Wellington attending the District Conference of the Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows. Pre-Wedding Party. There was a large attendance at the, Odd Fellows’ Hall, Greytown, on Thursday evening, when a kitchen tea party was tendered to Miss Jean Edwards, a member of the Greytown Hospital nursing staff. Te Tau’s orchestra supplied the music for the dancing and extras were played by Mr L. Daysh and Mrs Brice. Mr G. F. Eagar carried out the duties of M.C. The Monte Carlo competition was won by Miss Higginson and Mr T. Quinn. Mr J. F. Thompson conveyed the good wishes of all present to Miss Edwards and expressed regret at her leaving the nursing staff. He then asked Miss Edwards to come forward and accept the many presents. Mr T. Quinn, on behalf of Miss Edwards, expressed thanks to those who, had arranged the party and for the lovely gifts. The hostesses for the evening were Mrs Bambury, Misses A. Bambury and D. Richards. Appeal for Funds. At a meeting to be held in the Greytown Town Hall on Monday evening Messrs H. H. Daniell and G. Masters, of Masterton, will speak on behalf of the appeal to be launched for the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army.
