The Public Works canteen at Milford Sound was burned to the ground at 3 o’clock the other morning. Nothing was saved as the fire had a good hold when discovered. The office!s. whose . quarters are some distance away, were awakened by loud explosions. the bursting of gas cylinders. All- day Sunday there had been a severe thunderstorm which increased as night came on and it is believed that, the iron building was struck by lightning. Fortunately not all the stores were kept at the canteen and some items can be obtained from the Tourist Department. It will mean, however, that the men will be rationed on tea and tobacco and perhaps other commodities until stores arrive from Bluff. February has been an exceptionally wet month at Milford Sound. Floods have done considerable damage and last week tourists were held up on the track. Since January 21 rain has fallen on 31 days with a total of 48.5 inches.
