The Hon. A. Hamilton, Leader of the Opposition, left Wellington for the south last night. Miss Isabella Vallance, Cole Street, is one of Masterton’s residents entitled to receive a Centennial ribbon. The Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, left Wellington for the north by the Limited express last night. Mr K. Wylie, late of the staff of Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club, has been posted as L.A.C. to the R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Ohakea. Messrs E. Von Hartitzsch, B. Beck and J. Millar (Wellington), O. H. Rasmusen (Bideford), staying at the Hotel Midland, Masterton, yesterday. Mr D. F. Reid, London manager of the Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed chairman of the Associated Australasian Banks in London. The death has occurred of Mr F. A. MacQuisten, Conservative member of the House of Commons for Argyll, a London cablegram reports. Lieut.-Commissioner J. Evan Smith and Mrs Smith, the new territorial leaders fox- the Salvation Army in New Zealand, will arrive in Wellington on Tuesday from England, via Auckland. The many friends of Mr H. L. Esau, of Mastertcn, will learn with deep regret of the death of his father, Mr David James Esau, "which occurred at his residence Ohiro Road, Wellington, yesterday, after a very short illness. Mr F. R. Minton, South Road, Masterton, late on staff of the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club, who recently passed his L.A C. (Leading Air Craftsman) examination, has been posted on duty with the R.N.Z.A.F. Squadron, Woodbourne Aerodrome, Blenheim.
The appointment of Mr Foss Shanahan, LL.M., as secretary of the Organisation of National Security, was announced yesterday. He succeeds Lieutenant-Colonel W. G. Stevens, who has joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas.
The Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Industries and Commerce; the Hon R. Semple, Minister of Public Works; the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Labour, and the non. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Housing, left Wellington for the South Island last night. Lieutenant-Commander A. J. Galvin, Royal Naval Reserve, for many years an officer in the Tamaroa, the Largs Bay, and the Waimarama, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for outstanding conduct as an officer of the H.M.S. Lynx, one of the vessels of the Dover Patrol. Mr lan D. Stevenson, assistant electrical engineer to the Railways Department, is expected to return to New Zealand shortly, after spending some months in Great Britain, where he was associated with the Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Company of Manchester, and on the Continent.
Archbishop Panico, titular archbishop of Justiniana and Apostolic De_legate to Australia, New Zealand, ana the adjacent islands, who was Papal Legate to the New Zealand National Eucharistic Congress, made a farewell call at noon yesterday on the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, at his home in Northland. Mr K. Gunji, Consul-General for Japan, with Mrs Gunji and family, left Wellington for Auckland yesterday morning by car en route to Honolulu, where he has been appointed ConsulGeneral. Mr Gunji’s successor in New Zealand, Mr T. Fakuma, at present m Buenos Aires, is not expected to arrive at Wellington till June or July.
Mr Ftaymond Beatty, the popular Sydney baritone, has been engaged to sing the music of the title role in Mendelssohn’s oratorio, “Elijah,” to be performed in the Town Hall, Wellington, by the Royal Choral Union on March 30. Mr Beatty recently sang this music in a stage presentation of the work by the Royal Sydney Philharmonic Society.
The dearh occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday of Mr Rawiri Koeti Tamatea, at the age of 63 years. The late Mr Tamatea, who was born at Hamua, was a well-known Native resident of the Wairarapa, where he had resided all his life. For some years past he had lived at Hastwell. He is survived by a widow and an adopted son and daughter.
The funeral of the late Mr H. L. Pearse took place in Masterion yesteiday. There was a representative attendance of mourners, including members of the Masonic fraternity and oi the Wairarapa R.S.A. The Rev. John Davie conducted a service at the resideuce, Sussex Street and also officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers, representing Messrs Thomas Borthwick and Sons, the R.S.A., Presbyterian Church, Y.M.C.A. and Masonic Lodge were:—Messrs H. G. Alexander, G Hyde. E. H. Morton, G. Masters, R. Milne and J. McGregor.
Mr J. Colway, a member of the "Wanganui Chronicle" literary stall', who has joined the Royal New Zealand Ab Force, was met on Thursd-"' night by the stall’ and presented with a suitcase and a cheque. Tributes to Mr Colway s popularity were voiced by jhe manager, Mr L. C. Young, the editor, Mr H. C. Jenkins, and the chief reporter, Mr D. Strachan. Mr Colway is a qualified pilot and has been a member of the Wanganui Aero Club for three years. He is also a member of the Union Boat Club. Before joining the “Chronicle” staff Mr Colway had been the “Dominion’s" representative in Palmerston North, Wanganui and in Masterton. He ii an old boy of Wairarapa High School.
