Signor Gayda, said in an interview: "Italy will enter the war if it spreads to the Balkans, because the Danube, in addition to the Mediterranean, is the kej' to Italian security. “The conflict which has gone on for years between the Allies and Germany is so great now that I cannot see a; single factor making for peace,” he continued. “The encl of the war is far distant. There may be a new factor which will open the way for some sort of mediation, but such a factor will arise only from the war itself—perhaps in its spread, perhaps in its failure to spread.”
