Te Arolia Jubilee Meeting RACING GENERALLY OF HIGH STANDARD TOTALISATOR RETURNS QUITE SATISFACTORY (BY “THE GRAFTER.”) Considering that the totalisator investments of £104.930 10s last year were outstanding, and easily a record for the Te Aroha Jockey Club, the turnover of £87,188 10s at the Jubilee meeting just concluded was entirely satisfactory, especially in view of the petrol restrictions and the fact that heavy rain fell in the surrounding districts on Saturday morning. The adverse weather seriously affected the attendance of visitors from a distance, otherwise the result would have been better. It was fortunate that the rain held off at Te Aroha on Saturday until after the seventh race, but the heavy downpour affected the investments on the last event. The figures at the recent meeting have been exceeded on only three occasions. In 1937 the total reached £91,659, which was increased to £93,720 in 1938, culminating in the record last season. The previous highest return was in 1921, the boom year, when £79,211 was invested. The meeting generally was an unqualified success, the racing being of a very high standard, with a remarkable number of close and exciting finishes.
Kenthelda Scores. • The owner of the sire Beau Perc. Mr W. J. Smith, of St Aubin’s Stud, Scone. New South Wales, scored with one of his New Zealand purchases nt Victoria Park, Sydney, a fortnight ago. This was Kenthelda, a half-sister to Defaulter. for whom Mr Smith gave 500 guineas at the yearling sales at Wellington last year. Kenthelda was favourite, and she began so quickly as to cause connections and backers of other fancied horses to contend that she got an unfair break. This the starter denied, stating that Kenthelda went so fast in the twenty yards that she went right away from the others. Kenthelda was having her sixth start and this was her first win. Lou Rosa Resumes Work. After suffering a severe cold, which necessitated a let up for several weeks, the leading two-year-old Lou Rosa is back in work again at Te Aroha in preparation for the Great Northern Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie. The Foxbridge gelding was the centre of attention from visiting trainers at Te Aroha last Week and his condition caused much favourable comment. Possessing a splendid temperament. Lou Rosa has grown and thickened out a good deal since winning the Great Northern Foal Stakes and the Royal Stakes and his clash with Lambourn, Cheddington, Sir Beau and Gaymiss next month should be one of the highlights of the autumn racing. Plans for Pern. The three-year-old Pern, who showed stamina in- winning the Jubilee Hack Cup on the first day of the To Aroha Jockey Club's meeting, is to be gelded and will not be raced again this season. Although he was unplaced jn his 16 previous starts, Pern, who cost his owner, Mr W. H. Gaisford, 650 guineas as a yearling at the Sydney sales, has always been held in high regard by his connections, especially on account of his good breeding. Pern is by the Spion Kop horse The Buzzard, sire of The Buzzer, Marauder. Conandale, Six Fifty, and Early Bird, from Culfort who is a half-sister, by High Force, toLough Neagh. Culfort is from the Boniform mare Culture, who was also the dam of Eastern Belle, dam of the Auckland Cup winner The Buzzer to whom Pern is thus very closely related. Smart Two-year-old. The two-year-old Royal Descent will not race again this season and will be returned to his owner. Mr A. J. McGovern, at Te Awamutu, where he will be treated to a spell. A son of Beau Pere and The Begum, dam of Mazir, Stretto. Arvakur and High Caste. Royal Descent, who won the Midsummer Handicap at Ellerslie at Christmas, is a fine, upstanding colt and a good galloper, but unfortunately he is affected in the wind. His full-brother Arvakur was similarly affected but was successfully operated on by Dr W. C. Ring and intentions are that the same course will be taken with Royal Descent when the trouble becomes more advanced.
Promising Two-year-old. Diamond Trust, like his dam Trustworthy. has won his first race as a two-year-old. Diamond Trust was first home in the Great Northern Stakes atEpsom, recently, after a hard fight with Portadown over the last furlong. Diamond Trust, by Jewel Pointer, was bred by Mrs T. Brady, who also bred Trustworthy, which won races over all distances as a free-legged pacer. Diamond Trust displayed promise at the matinee meetings held in Auckland early in the season. He is trained by C. H. Goodall, but was driven by P. Campbell, a young driver who. for some time, took care of Harold Logan.Diamond Trust is a good, solid typo of juvenile, and should develop into a high-class three-year-old. He is not engaged in the Timaru Nursery Stakes. Portadown, which ran second to him in the Epsom classic, is by Jack Potts from Kewpie’s Guy. by Blue Mountain King, from Kewpie, dam of several good performers. Portadown is owned by Mr R. Troughton, in whose interests Kewpie’s Guy and Kewpie’s King won races. Portadown is trained by J. T. Paul, who has had much success with horses of all ages.
