Showing signs of severe weather encountered in southern latitudes and with a list of eight degrees caused by her fertiliser cargo shifting in a gale, the Finnish barque Penang, 1997 tons, under the command of Captain Karlsson, entered port early this morning. The Penang, which made a voyage of 96 days from Juan de Nova, in the Indian Ocean, berthed at King's Wharf. After leaving Juan de Novd in December the Penang, ran before the westerly trades south of Australia. Captain Karlsson choosing high latitudes to take a southabout course to bring the barque to port up the east coast of New Zealand. Boisterous weather was experienced in these waters, culminating in a gale which smashed the Penang's helm and caused slight damage to the deck. Two of the complement of 20 in the Penang are Aucklanders, Messrs D. W. Galloway and E. J. Pepper, who joined the barque here in 1938. They will leave the Penang in Auckland as able seamen. The only other British subject is Miss Winifred Lloyd, Reading, England. who has made many voyages under sail. She signed' on as assistant sailmaker in the Penang before the barque left Middlesbrough in July with a cargo of fertiliser for Mauritius, from which island the vessel proceeded to Juan de Nova to load for New Zealand.

Of the rest of the complement, 16. including all officers, are Finns, and one is a Dane. Practically all are youths seeking experience under sail. The Penang will remain in Auckland till early next week, when she will leave for New Plymouth to discharge the rest of her cargo.
