CARTERTON’S DAY
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS TOMORROW PROCESSION AND SPORTS. DEVELOPMENT FROM BUSH AREA (“Times-Age" Special.) Carterton will be en fete tomorrow when settlers and visitors from all parts of the Wairarapa will gather to . celebrate the first one hundred years of -Vew Zealand’s progress, and pay homage to the hardy pioneers who founded and furthered settlement in the Carterton district, and whose descendants have nobly carried on with the task to make Carterton lhe progressive town it is today. The developmenl from densely bush-covered country to prosperous dairying lands and the' building of a tine township will be. depicted in brilliant pageantry.
The Centennial celebrations tomorrow will take the form of a procession which will fall in at 1.30 o’clock at Victoria Street, culminating in a sports gathering at the Showgrounds, commencing at 2.30 o’clock. The procession will be indeed worthy of Carterton The procession will be headed by pioneers and their descendants, school children. the Carterton Municipal Band, followed by Boy Scouts, ex-ser-vice men, the local Fire Brigade, splendid trade exhibits and the Wairarapa Scottish Pipe Band. Then will come ancient and modern forms of transport farming plant, Wairarapa South County and Borough plant and kindred items of interest. The procession will represent a period covering almost one hundred years, and will interest both young and old. The Maori race will be well represented, and will enliven proceedings with hakas, poi dances and melodies.
A strong committee has all arrangements well in hand and all indications point to the gathering being an outstanding success. At the moment the weather conditions for Carterton’s Centennial Celebrations are not very encouraging. A drizzling rain has set in but nevertheless it has not retarded the progress of events, and this morning the town is being beflagged from Pembroke Street to Belvedere Street, and intermingled are strings of coloured electric light bulbs. Storekeepers are also making a big effort and shop fronts are being profusely decorated with bunting and coloured electric lights. It is hoped that the weather will prove favoured for the old time festivities tonight, and the great procession and sports tomorrow. The indications are that Carterton township will make a great show today and tomorrow and will excel itself.
