The Champion Stakes. The Australian and Now Zealand Champion Stakes was run twice in New Zealand, once in Dunedin and once jn Canterbury, and Ladybird won on each occasion.
Jockeys Fight While Riding. During the running of the A.J.C. Doncaster of 1869 a fight occurred on horseback ■ between the riders of two horses. The jockeys lashed savagely at each other with their whips, and although one of them won the race and the other was third, the two horses were disqualified and their riders fined.
