SOLDIER’S DEATH
VICTIM FOUND ON ROADSIDE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 26. Believed, to have been the victim of a motoring hit-and-run collision, Leslie Evan Thomas, married, a member of the Forestry Company stationed at Papakura Camp, was found lying unconscious on the side of the Great South Road between Papatoetoe and Wiri yesterday. He was suffering from serious head injuries and was taken to Auckland Hospital where he died early this morning. Within a short distance of where Mr Thomas was found pieces of glass, obviously from the headlamp of a motorcar. were strewn on the roadway. It is thought that, the man was walking on the edge of the road and was struck by an overtaking vehicle. The belated discovery of the victim, who is believed to have lain on the roadside throughout the night, was due to the configuration of the banking concealing his presence.
