SODIUM CHLORATE
SOME STORAGE DANGERS. A statement calling attention to the danger arising from the storing of sodium chlorate inside farm buildings was made recently by an Auckland insurance authority. He said the danger was emphasised by a recent happening in the Waikato, when, as a result of a tin of the mixture exploding, a farmer's wool shed narrowly escaped destruction. He said it was generally recognised that, when mixed with organic matter, sodium chlorate will explode by friction or percussion. However, in this case it had been left in a tin on a beam in the woolshed. Smoke was seen issuing from the roof, and it was found that the sodium chlorate had exploded and caused an incipient fire.
Apart from precautions taken in the use of sodium chlorate and lime for treating ragwort, he said, this and similar recent occurrences in the Waikato showed that it was necessary to store the mixture outside buildings.
