TRADE & PEACE

MR HULL’S PROGRAMME HOPES OF CUSHIONING ECONOMIC SHOCK. BILL BEFORE COMMITTEE OF SENATE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) WASHINGTON. February 26. The Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, told the Senate Finance Committee that an extension of the Reciprical Trade Treaty programme would help to cushion the economic shock when'loo millions, now engaged in war work throughout the world, seek private employment. He added that the State Department is proceeding on the theory that after the war either complete totalitarianism or sanity will dictate trade policies. Mr Hull defended in detail his reciprocal programme, lauding it as the sole specific in the attempt to break down the highly-developed state of chaos in world trade. His statement opens the fight for the passage of the Bill through the Senate. The indications are that the Senate will follow the House of Representatives.
