BATTLE IN BLIZZARD

THE RUSSIAN THRUST AT VIBORG ENORMOUS COST IN LIVES. FURTHER CAPTURES CLAIMED. Ey Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. HELSINKI. February 25. The Finns estimate that 86,000 Russians have died since the beginning of the Russian west isthmus push, and a communique has recorded 3000 more killed elsewhere, including 1000 in a repulsed attack at Salmenkaiti, 1000 north-east of Lake Ladoga and others at Kuhmo, Taibela and Salla. The eastern half of the Mannerheim Line is apparently intact, despite the heavy offensive, but the Russians claim the occupation of Bjorko Island and two other fortified islands in the Bay of Viborg, with the capture of 22 guns. The land offensive continues despite fogs and blizzards, with Russians claiming the capture of 28 more strong points.
