Topical Names. Racehorses with topical names were first and second in the Borough Handicap at the Westland Racing Club's meeting on Saturday. They were Echelon and King’s Navy, Defaulter Breaks Down. Defaulter's presence at Wingatui on Saturday attracted much interest, as the majority of the racegoers had not previously seen the big Riccarton champion, but few among the crowd who gave him an enthusiastic reception knew that it was probably the last time he would appear in public as a racehorse. When he trotted back to the enclosure after his race it could be seen that he was saving his affected front leg, but though palpably lame the trouble did not then seem at all serious. In fact when Mr Greenwood replied to the president’s remarks at the presentation ceremony he voiced the satisfaction of all connected with Defaulter that he had survived the race apparently sound. Unfortunately, when cooled off. the horse became very lame and as he was unable to make use of the limb yesterday he was not brought back to Riccarton ( with his team mates but is to be left at Wingatui for a few days to give him a chance to throw off the pain before setting him on his train journey home. The breakdown is in the joint previously affected in Australia and it is not likely that any further attempt will be made to train him.
