AJAX MAKES TURF HISTORY IN AUSTRALIA

(BY “THE GRAFTER.”)

At the opening day of the Woodville Jockey Clubs' meeting on Saturday the chief event went to Dainty Sheila, third favourite, who won comfortably from Mataroa. Rakahanga brought off a surprise by accounting for the Ruahine Handicap, heading the favourite, Amigo, by 11 lengths.

Saturday was “outsiders’ day” at Dunedin, only two favourites winning. The Jockey Club Handicap was won by Swordstick who just got home on another outsider, Thermidor. Defaulter had no difficulty in winning the Hazlett Cup, being two lengths ahead of Disdain at the finish.

The Herries Memorial Cup at Te Aroha was won by Gamos, a rank outsider, by a length from Mintlaw, another outsider. Lexden scared by a head from Bronze Moth in the Waitoa Handicap, while the Jubilee Hack Cup went to Pern. Only one straightout favourite saluted the judge. At Hokitika the chief event was won by Studley Royal, and at Waiapu the Waiapu Stakes was contested by two horses, Small Boy and Mendelssohn, the former winning by a head.

By winning the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday for the third time Ajax made tiirf history being the first horse to register such a performance. Gladsome had won the event twice.
