REPORTS FOR PAST MONTH STREETS & FOOTPATHS. RECONSTRUCTION OF COLE ST. * CULVERT. The Borough Engineer. Mr C. R. Mabson, reported that during January Cockburn Street path and flank on the north side between High Street and South Road had been re-graded to suit now kerb levels; the outer edge of the Kuripuni Street path had been reformed to new kerb and would be sown in grass next month; Herbert Street kerbing on the south side from Dixon Street to Mr Steer's had been completed and the grass verge would be re-graded shortly; Dixon Street kerbing on the west side from Worksop Road towards the Makora Creek had been started; Bennington Street metalling between College Street and Masters Crescent had been metalled and would be blinded and consolidated during the next few days. The following tarring of streets and paths has been carried out: —Short Street, roadway, High Street to York Street; Queen Street, flanks. Russell Street io Triangle; High Street, flanks, Kuripuni Triangle to South Belt; Bentley Street, flanks, Lincoln Road to the river; Short Street, flanks and path. Pownall Street to top rise (north side); Pownall Street, path, Short Street to Michael Street (west side). A start had been made with the re-construction of the Cole Street culvert.
Water and drainage: During the month five new services and four new renewals were installed. Ten inch main in Totara Street was repaired and li inch main at the Railway Station was cleaned out. Bentley Street three inch cast iron main had been cleaned between Lincoln Road and the 10 inch main.
Building permits: During the month 4 permits were issued having an estimated value of £399 7s 6d, the fees thereon amounting to £2. For the corresponding month last year 4 permits were issued having an estimated value of £1046 10s. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Acting Borough Inspector, Mr J, McGregor, reported:—Notifiable infectious disease: Pulmonary tuberculosis, 2 cases: scarlet fever, 1 case. Plumbing and drainage: Eleven permits were issued and the usual testing and inspection work was. carried out. Milk supply: The usual milk samples were taken for general analysis. Eatinghouse licence: One application has been received for a transfer of an cat-1 inghouse licence. Requisitions: The! following requisitions were served: Plumbing repairs, 5: cut back shrubs, 2; clear noxious weeds. 1; clear rubbish, 2; abate nuisance, 1. Traffic: Heavy traffic fees for the month amounted to £l7 2s JOd. New drivers: Fourteen ap> plicants Wire examined, one failing to pass the test. GAS MANAGER'S REPORT. The Gas Manager, Mr J. Y. Douglas, reported:—Gas manufactured: Total gas made corrected was 3.436,400 cubic feet. The make per ton was 18,000 cubic feet, and the calorific value 460 B.T.U. The Government Inspector visited the works on Friday, January 19. the calorific value of the gas was 493 B.T.U. and the pressure conformed to Government regulations. The works are running very satisfactorily at the present time. PARK REPORT. The custodian of the Park, Mi- H. Sturgeon, reports:—General work of the Park has been carried out, satisfactorily during January. Cleaning and hoeing rosary, cleaning up South Park and digging around all trees, also the street trees at south end of town, and cutting grass and hoeing drives at Mawley Park has been completed. The work for the month will be getting topdressing soil ready for top dressing, putting in seeds for autumn planting and getting soil ready for same. The croquet ladies want their two lawns broken up and re-sown the same as the tennis courts were done last year. Fourteen more purebred mallards wore put on the lake. The council decided to refer consideration of the request for the croquet lawns to be resown to the estimates meeting.
