WAR PRISONER’S DEATH

FATAL SEQUEL TO JOKE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. February 20. At an inquest today on the death of Thomas Egan, aged 50. a war pensioner, a verdict of death, due to meningitis following on an injury to an eye, was brought in. The injury was received when a dispute took place between Egan and Daniel John Mclntyre. Detective Hogan, who conducted the inquest, said Mclntyre was charged with manslaughter, but a Grand Jury returned no bill. The evidence was that the trouble arose from a practical joke, interrupted by Mclntyre when he found Egan making a dummy to pul in Mclntyre's bed. Mclntyre pushed Egan away, later hitting him in the face.
