MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL SUPPLY OF GAS TO STATE HOUSES. FURTHER REPRESENTATIONS TO GOVERNMENT. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor. Mi- T. ner. R. Russell. G. D. Wilson W. 11. Judd. A. D. Low. and W. White. An apology for absence was received from Councillor W. Kemp. Mr G. H. Mackley, late General Manager of Railways, wrote thanking the council for its goodwill and helpfulness during his term of office. The council decided to reply expressing its appreciation of the courtesy extended by Mr Mackley and to wish him happy years of retirement. The council granted the Central School permission to use the Dixon Street Baths on February 22 for the annual swimming sports and the Girl Guides were given permission to use the C. and A. Baths on March 2.

The Town Clerk was given authority to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Town Clerks to be hold in Wellington on March 5. On behalf of Te Ore Ore Maoris. Mrs K. Te Tau wrote thanking the council for its donation of £lO to the Pa Rebuilding Fund. The camp commandant, Trentham Military Camp, wrote conveying thanks on behalf of the men, to the citizens of Masterton for their generous donations of books to the camp library. Permission was given to the Lansdowne School to hold a picnic in the Park, on payment of the requisite deposit of £2 to offset any expense that might be incurred in cleaning up the Park.

It was agreed to defer for consideration at next year's estimates the question of procuring rowing skiffs for use on the Park Lake.

The Under-Secretary Department of Internal Affairs advised the further postponing of dog registration until March 1.

The transfer of an eating house licence from Mrs M. E. Southey to Toma Simunovich was affirmed. In reply to the Oil Fuel Controller regarding a request, for the consorvalion of petrol, the engineer. Mr C. R. Mabson, stated that the only petrol used was for essential services and it was impracticable to make a reduction without .curtailing necessary maintenance.

An application by Mr L. M. Donaldson for a metered water supply to a trough in Gordon Street, in the Masterton County, was deferred for the present in view of the water restrictions imposed within the borough. Following on a report to. the Works Committee by the engineer as to a site suitable for a men's convenience, the committee decided that the matter be deferred until the next meeting to enable further inquiries to be made. The Mayor suggested that March 14. the day selected for the Masterton Centennial celebrations would be a suitable opportunity to have erected the memorial tablets at Opaki Road and High Street, commemorating the local Centennial memorial of Masterton and district. I

The council decided that specimen exhibits of water pipes before and after concrete lining should be exhibited in a Queen Street shop window for the information of ratepayers. The Hon P. C. Webb wrote in connection with the supply of gas to State houses, intimating that he would discuss the matter further with Mr Armstrong. Minister of Housing. It was decided that a letter be sent Mr Armstrong, asking to be favoured with an early reply’ to the council’s representations that the Housing Department's written promise to instal gas in fifty per cent of the State houses erected on the Nops block be carried out.
