Betting Rules. '•There is a move afoot to consider a uniform set of betting rules throughout the Commonwealth.” said the secretary of the Victoria Racing Club (Mr A. V. Kewney) recently. The question will be discussed at a conference of the principal racing clubs to be held at Sydney during the Easter meeting. The committee of the V.R.C. has appointed a sub-committee to review the rules of betting, and it is likely that its decision will form the basis of the deliberations in Sydney. Jockey Disqualified. Jockey F. Browder was disqualified for two years for alleged foul riding, under the Australian rule of racing 122, at the Abany (W.A.) Racing Club’s annual carnival. He rode Hazelwood in the first division of the Plantagenet Purse, and it was alleged that he interfered with the winner. Eridess, ridden by C. Taylor. A Land Deal. It is reported that the Randwick trainer. J. T. Jamieson, who was many years ago a trainer in Masterton, has purchased a block of 250 acres of land at Pukekura from the estate of Edward Allen, and will take over in April. Meanwhile, the property will be surveyed and a house erected. It will be occupied by a son of the purchaser, although Jamieson himself intends to spend a good deal of time there. He will probably keep his brood mares there and also use it to spell horses when they require a rest after racing in Australia.
Yearlings at Ellerslie. Several yearlings have been broken in at Ellerslie, and are already going through the first steps of their education on the track. The trainer R. S. Bagby • secured a particularly nice youngster in the Lord Quex—Tuata mare colt, whom he purchased at the Trentham yearling sales for 250 guineas. The colt has everything to recommend him as regards appearance and, although he comes from a mare of short pedigree, Lavina and Tuai tara, who have been the only two off- ‘ spring of the dam to race, are winners. Bagby also has under his care a filly by Lysander from Cometary, the dam of a speedy galloper in Surmount. who won the Wellington Stakes in sensational manner two years ago. Retired to Stud. The three-year-old filly Konneta, by Bulandshar from Sufiny Hours, has finished her racing career, and is to go to the stud. Recently purchased by Mr N. Grafas, Konneta was a brilliant two-year-old, but she has failed to reveal any form this season, and lately has suffered attacks of bleeding. A Great Record. A great record both on the flat and over hurdles is being established by the Gisborne trained mare Queen’s Dream, whose double success at the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s summer meeting last week brought her tally to seven firsts, three seconds and a third in her last 12 starts. Queen’s Dream is a six-year-old mare by Defoe from Heavenly Dream, and is a half-sister to the good jumper John Charles. Mahala Joins O'Connor’s Team. The former amateur rider M. O'Connor who was recently granted a trainer's licence, is getting a large team together at Ellerslie. The latest addition lo his stable is the capable jumper Mahala. who looks in splendid order to commence a preparation for the winter! racing. With the services of the other accomplished jumper in All Irish, Bal- ' dric and Te Rongo. who are well for-1 ward in condition, O'Connor should have a formidable combination for the I approaching season. Ellis to Ride Willie Win. A. E. Ellis will have the mount on Willie Win in the Dunedin Cup. ■ He steered previous winners in Loughrea and Silver Ring, who won with 10.6 in 2min 30 3-ssec, after being handled with masterly horsemanship. Dunedin Cup. A field of 15 acceptors for the Dunedin Cup should find a quite satisfactory field at the post. Possibly a slight shrinkage may take place before they reach the post, but it seems quite safe to predict that at least a dozen or more will sport silk in Otago’s time-honour-ed. race. The field may be regarded as stronger from a numerical point of view than in quality, but it is mostly comprised of horses that have performed fairly well under handicap conditions. Willie Win’s return to winning form in the Midsummer Handicap recalls the fact that his past performances include a second in the Melbourne Cup. Norseman has displayed improved form amongst the best at Riccarton and Trentham, and Thermidor generally shapes well at Wingatui where she holds the track record for a mile and two and a-half furlongs. Queen of Song has a win and a place to her credit in the race and Capricious made a bold bid for success in both the New Zealand Cup and the Metropolitan Handicap. Alma will not be anchored by weight as she has been sent up only 2.; lb for her win at the Christmas meeting, and meets Thermidor who ran fourth at the margin named on worse terms. The light weights engaged should contribute to what promises to be an interesting race provided by the largest field on the card for the day. Queen of Song. Queen of Song, who figures amongst the acceptances for the Dunedin Cup, ran third in 1937 with 9.0 to Wild Chase 8.9 and Tunneller 7.12 in 2min 32 3-ssec. She won last year with 8.6 in 2min 33sec on a slow track from Wild Chase 9.1 and Argentic 8.2. Royal Chief 9.8, Nightwings 7.12 and Galloon 7.9 were unplaced. In he)' latest performance Queen of Song 8.6 ran Willie Win 8.8 to a length in the Midsummer Handicap. and. having the same weight in the Dunedin Cup meets Willie Win on 71b better terms. She meets Settlement, who finished a length away third, on 11b worse terms, so that the Songbird mare has been well, treated. It was reported that Queen of Song pulled up sore after racing in the Midsummer Handicap, but she walked soundly enough when the writer saw her untrucked at Washdyke the following day. Lady Acushla. One of the winners at the Rotorua meeting was Lady Acushla, a grey by Hoylake and one of the few winners left by him. Hoylake ran third to Ora-
trix and Rapier in the New Zealand Cup of 1927. The only greys or a roan ever placed in the New Zealand Cup are Son of a Gun, a roan that finished second to Manton in 1888, Scots Grey, who ran second to Tirailleur in 1889. Canteen, who ran third in 1902 and won in 1903 and Hoylake, a grey by Poltava (son of Polymelus), whose dam, Tagalie, a grey, won the English Derby of 1912. L. H. Hewitt won the One Thousand Guineas on Tagalie. but lost the ride on her at Epsom. Lady Acushla inherits the grey colour from both sides of her pedigree, as her dam traces back to Maid of Athol, a grey that produced 16 foals, including eight greys, six bays and two chestnuts, almost as many colours as can be found on a painter’s palette. “It’s Friday.” An Irish and a Scotch jockey were returning by train from a country meeting. They bought ham sandwiches at a railway refreshment room, but after one bite the Irish jockey threw his out of the window. The Scotch jockey took one look at the Irishman, another at the sandwiches, and then threw his out of the window. A few miles farther on the Scotch jockey asked: “What was wrong with those sandwiches?" “"Nothing at all. replied the Irishman, "but it’s Friday.” The Scotsman has never forgiven hirnRACING FIXTURES February 22 and 24.—Dunedin.
