CARTERTON

ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The quarterly summoned meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge was held last evening, N.G. Bro. C. C. Deller presiding over a good attendance of members. One candidate was initiated into the Order and given a very hearty welcome. The Wellington District officers, consisting of the Grand Master, Bro. Craddock, the Deputy G.M., Bro. A. J. B. Foote; Bro. Jorgensen, trustee, and the District Secretary, Bro. E. G. Guise, were admitted and given a warm welcome. Two members declared on the sick funds of the lodge and two declared off the funds. Sick pay amounting to £l3 16s 8d and other accounts amounting to £2O 12s 7d were passed for payment. The annual balance sheet, which was adopted, showed the lodge to be in a very sound financial position. Bros. L. H. Smart and H. A. McPhee were re-elected lodge auditors.

P.G. Bro. G. S. Bruce was appointed to represent the lodge at the Wellington District Conference which is to be held in Wellington on Saturday, March 2, and P.D.G.M. Bro. C. J. DeLacey, was appointed to represent the lodge at the annual meeting of the Wellington District Hospital Association on Friday evening, March 1, at Wellington. The agenda paper for the special District Conference to consider war measures and the 1940- District Conference was discussed, and the delegate, Bro. Bruce, was granted a free hand at the conference. It was decided to grant £2 2s to the Carterton Centennial Baths Fund. The District Grand Master, Bro. Craddock, gave a resume of the business during the year of his grand mastership and was applauded for his fine address. He was followed by the Deputy G.M., Bro. Jorgenson and the District Secretary, Bro. E. W. Guise, all of whom were listened to with close attention, and all were warmly received. The Noble Grand thanked the G.M. and his officers for having visited the lodge. The visitors were entertained at supper and later left for Wellington. It w’as pointed out by the Wellington District officers that during the Great War (1914-18) the Order of Manchester Unity Odd Fellows paid out to soldier members £22,000 in sick pay, besides keeping them good on the books of their respective lodges. This was considered a magnificent effort. THE CENTENNIAL COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the Carterton Borough and Wairarapa Centennial Committee was held in the borough office last evening. The Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) presided over a large attendance. It was resolved that a meeting of the ladies’ committee be called for Thursday, February 22, at 8 p.m. at the Dalefield Dairy Co’s, building, for the purpose of forming a committee with a view to holding a social and old time dance in connection with the celebrations on Friday, March 1. The Education Board is to be asked for a subsidy toward the cost of the erection of the combined Memorial Baths. Messrs R. T. Forbes and J. Steel were appointed organisers for the social and old time dance to be held in the King's Theatre on March 1. It was resolved that the speakers for the centennial celebrations on March 2 be the Mayor, Messrs B. Roberts, M.P., and D. McGregor (chairman South County Council). The Tradesmen’s Association is to be asked to close their business premises on Friday, March 1 on the occasion of the old timers’ dance. It was decided that the churches in the town be asked to hold special services in their respective churches on Sunday, March 3, in connection with the celebrations. An invitation is to be forwarded to all persons in the district of over 60 years residence to be present and . that the general public be charged Is 6d (men) and is (ladies) for the social. Invitations are also to be forwarded to the Mayor and Mayoress of Masterton, Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough, and the chairmen of the Masterton, Wairarapa South and Featherston counties, and Miss Card to be present at the various functions. A deputation consisting of the Mayor and Messrs J. B. Lawrence and J. Steel was appointed to wait upon ihe secretary-manager of the Waira.rapa Power Board in connection with the cost of the installation of colour-

cd lights in the borough. Messrs R. P. Wakelin, J. Finn, F. Booth, G. Peters. A. George, T. Hughes and W. Howard Booth are to be asked to arrange a procession from Holloway Street to the Showgrounds on Saturday, March 2, the procession to leave Holloway Street not later than 2 p.m. It was decided to ask the Carterton troop of Boy Scouts, the pioneer'settlers, the Fire Brigade, the school children and others to take part in the procession. Bowling. A team of Returned Soldiers from Carterton are taking part in the R.S.A. tournament in Wellington today. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Worsfold, who have been on holiday, have returned to Carterton. Mrs Ireland, of Pembroke Street, entered the Greytown Hospital today for treatment and will undergo an operation. Mrs Clifton, of Palmerston North, is a visitor to Carterton, and is staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. Patterson, Pembroke Street. Tar Sealing. The County workmen yesterday made a start with tar sealing Belvedere 'Road to the borough boundary.

Tivoli Theatre. Good progress is being made with the alterations to the Tivoli picture theatre, and it is expected that the work will be completed in the course of a month. Lighting alterations have been made inside the theatre. It is understood that when the work is fin-' ished the name of the theatre will be changed, and that the official opening of the re-modelled theatre will be marked with the showing of an outstanding picture. Already seats have been booked for this special occasion. Vandalism. At Saturday’s meeting of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society it was stated that vandals had broken windows in buildings that could only be reached from inside the grounds. Should the offenders be caught court proceedings are to be taken against them. Beside windows, padlocks on gates have been broken.
