PRIZES AWARDED
CENTENNIAL LITERARY COMPETITION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The results of the Centennial Competition conducted, on behalf of the Government, by the National Historical Committee, were announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry) today. There was a total of 778 entries. Results; — Essay. M. Holcroft, Invercargill, 1. G. N. Morris. Auckland, and Miss D. Loughnan, Sydney, equal, 2. Long Poem. The Rev J. R. Hervey, Christchurch, 1. Di- D. Raymond. Waipukurau. 2. Short Poem. Miss Helena Henderson. Christchurch, and the Rev J. R. Hervey, ( equal. 1. Play. No first prize was awarded. Miss Janet McLeod. Christchurch, was placed second and Miss Audrey Loathes. Auckland, third. Novel. Mr F. 11. Harris, Lakemba, New South Wales. I. The second prize was not awarded. Mrs E. N. Grentorex. Now South Wales. 3. Mrs A. McCarthy, Kohaka, Hawke’s Bay, also gets a third prize. Short Story. Miss E. Midgley, Auckland, and Frank Sargeson, Auckland, equal, I. R. Finlayson, Auckland, 3. "1 am sure something of value to New Zealand literature has been achieved by holding the competition.’’ said iVlr Parry.
