PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS. Next week the New Zealand Presbyterian Church will have completed a century of work. On February 20, 1840, the first Scottish colonists arrived and the first church service was held on February 23, on Petone beach, the preacher being the Rev. John Macfarlane. The General Assembly will meet in St. Andrew's Church. Wellington, on Tuesday 20, at 7.30 p.m. when overseas delegates will be welcomed. On Wednesday at 10 a.m. the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper will be dispensed and the Governor-General will be present. On Thursday al 7.45 p.m. there will be a youth demonstration in St. John’s Church. Finally the Assembly will meet in St. David's, Petone, and a procession will bo held after which, on Petone Beach at 3 p.m. at a public gathering a service of commemoration will be held on the historic spot of the landing when an lona Cross will be unveiled. The public is invited to all these gatherings. From small beginnings the Presbyterian Church has grown vigorously and by Government statistics in 1936 there were 367,855 Presbyterians, the church being the second largest in the Dominion.
