MANY PITS THROWN IDLE IN AUSTRALIA STOPPAGES ORDERED BY UNIONS. FORTY-HOUR WEEK SOUGHT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY. February 14. The coal-mining unions have launched a campaign aimed at securing a 40-hour week of five days for all sections of the coal industry. A one-day stoppage each week was inaugurated today and threw idle all the mines in the north and also four in the west of .New South Wales.
No particular clay will be selected for this stoppage, this being left to the discretion of the colliery lodges.
