OBITUARY

MR C. F. WILTON. Mr Charles Wilton, one of Masterton’s earliest settlers, died yesterday afternoon in his 87th year, after a somewhat protracted illness. • Mr Wilton was born in Wellington on October 14. 1853. being the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs Charles Wilton, He came to the Wairarapa when seven wars of age. and had spent the jest of his life in the district. Until he retired to live in Masterton 25 years ago he' followed farming pursuits, firstly at Taratahi and then at Opaki. During the Hau-Hau rising. Mr Wilton was a member of the Volunteer Corps and for a number of years held the rank of Lieutenant. He also belonged to the Masterton and Opaki Rifle Club and represented both these clubs on numerous occasions. For many years he was an active member of the Masterton Fire Brigade and later he was made an hononary member. For the past 25 years Mr Wilton was a member of the Park Bowling Club, and at the lime of his death was the only life member of the club. Mr C. Wilton is survived by his wife, a son (Mr P. G. Wilton), a daughter (Mrs R. Harris), two brothers (Messrs W. and A. Wilton) and three sisters (Mrs A. Matthews. Mrs W. Henson and Mrs R. King"). There are four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. The funeral will take place tomorrow. leaving the residence of Mr R. Harris. Opaki Road, at 2 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
