MASTERTON CLUB. LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. At the Park Oval last night, the' weekly meeting of the Mastertoil Amateur Athletic Club was held.' . Great interest was taken in the appearance of T. Allen, of Otago, a member of the team which is to attack the world's (our mile relay record, on Saturday. Starting in the : ;-mile handicap event he won with case, his co-marker W. Pullar. being several yards away second. Allen bears a well trained appearance and his free, long striding action brought many favourable comments from the spectators. The times returned by the scratch men on the various laps were: —First lap 62sec. half-mile 2min ssec, and the full distance 3min 9 4-ssec. Pullar's time was 3min 10 3-5 see, a very good effort. It only remains for conditions to be favourable for the Wairarapa public to have the unique opportunity of seeing the attempt on the world's record on Saturday by the famous New Zealand quartette, Pullar, Boot. Matthews, and Allen.
Owing to rain the programme was curtailed: nevertheless some exciting races were witnessed. The junior 75 yards handicap was won by D. Wickens by inches from H. Hayes and D. Adams. In the senior 75 yards handicap A. Edwards, maintaining his good form of recent weeks, won from M. Sellar with E. Thompson third. The 75 yards ladies' handicap was a great tussle all the way. Miss J. Grantham winning by inches from Miss M. Brett. In the senior 220 yards handicap J. Wickens followed up last week's success with another good performance. M. Sellar was in the picture all the way for a close second. The results are as follow: — 75 Yards Handicap, senior: A. Edwards 1; M. Sellar 2; E. Thompson 3. Sellar 2; E. Thompson 3. Time. 22 2-ssec. 220 Yards Handicap. junior: D. Adams 1: H. Hayes 2; P. Alexander 3. Time, 24 3-ssec. Schoolboys' 75 Yards Handicap: W. Patete 1; F. Voyce 2: W. Grant 3. ;;-mile Handicap: T. Allen 1; W. A. Pullar 2: B. Patrick 3. Time. 3min 9 4-5 sec. j-MILE TRACK RECORD. LOWERED BY T. ALLEN. Theo Allen New Zealand Empire Games representative and former British Empire 1180 yards record holder, last evening at the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club’s sports meeting, lowered the Park Oval track record for IJ-rnile. His lime for the distance was 3min 9 ‘l-ssoc. which bettered the previous best. 3miu 10 1-ssec. put up by W. Pul- i lar. Allen appeared to be running well within himself and according to competent judges should bo capable of running under 4min 19sec for the mile on Saturday in the relay record attempt. | Pullar. who finished in 3min 10 2-ssec, I a few yards behind Allen, was running very easily, and he. too, will be at top form on Saturday. Entries for Saturday’s events are larger than those for the Anniversary Day meeting and include such well known outside athletes as Graham Quinn, J. Sutherland, W. Fulton, A. Cockrane, Miss J. Crampton, D. J. Butler, and W. F. Russell. The main event Hie attempt, on the 4-mile relay world record, is timed to start at 3.45 p.m.
