Logan Derby/ winner of the first division of the second qualifying event at the Inter-Dominion championship held at Perth on Saturday, is one of the greatest pacers in commission. Bought for sixty guineas, he has won nearly £BOOO in stakes. He was bred by Mr E. Tallow at his famous stud in Tasmania, and was
purchased by Mr W. Balloch, of Victoria. Later, Mr Bulloch decided to abandon trotting for galloping, and Logan Derby, then a three-year-old. was purchased by Mr 11. Barnes, of Launceston.
Since them Logan Derby has won fifty-two races, mid lias been successful in Tasmania, Victoria. South Australia. West Australia, and New Zealand.
In his only trip to the Dominion ho covered himself with glory. He started seven times for three wins and four places. On the first occasion ’no finished third in the New Zealand Trotting Cup to Morello and Lucky Jack. His next start, resulted in a third, mid on the third day of that meeting he ran second in 4min 14 4-ssee for two miles, after meeting trouble in a big field. Later in the same'day. he won the Free For All. Ho then went to Dunedin where he won the two principal races at the
Forbury Club's spring meeting. In his seventh and last appearance he ran second, after having received veterinary attention on the previous day for an indisposition he developed after winning on the first day. On his return to Tasmania. Logan Derby was seriously ill, and it was the -general opinion that he would never race again. After a long spell and treatment, however, he made a complete recovery, and is showing his best form in the qualifying events at Perth. On Saturday, he established a new record for West Australia by pacing a mile and a half in 3min 131 sec. He is now well ahead of his opponents on points for the championship. Since he began racing a little over three years ago. Logan Derby has travelled 32,000 miles.
Density Locks Well. ; A southern writer says Dial there ' are few better-looking horses in the I land now than Density. Since she I raced in the spring the Pink Coat mare ; has thickened out into a handsome individual, and she has a sound set of : legs to carry her muscular top. Denise, ~ the dam of Density, after producing I three fillies, has now a nice colt foal to . Pink Coat. The Newmarket Handicap. .For the Newmarket Handicap, of £3OOO, to be run at Flemington next . month, three previous winners are engaged—Regular Bachelor (who won in, 1936), Auric’s Star (1937) and El Golea (1939). The 1938 winner Ajax was also 1 engaged, but he was withdrawn on Saturday. Substitute for Derby. Although it has been announced that the Derby will not bo run this year atEpsom—it is still possible that there will be a war substitute at Newmarket if circumstances in the next couple of months or so permit the continuation of racing in England during the summer —the great cross-country event of the year, the Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree, Liverpool, is to be contested in the ordinary course, and its date has been fixed as April 5. During the last war the Grand NaI ticnal was run an Aintree in 1915. but in 1916, 1917, mid 1918 there were only substitute races al. Gatwick-. Small Dominion Representation. New Zealand has only a few horses entered this year for the A.J.C. Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup at Randwick at Easter, but there are a number of others in the field with a Dominion interest because of their being 'bred here. In the Doncaster are Beaulivre and Merry March, as well as the Dominion-bred High Caste, Sir Regent, Mosaic, Limulet, Gold Salute. Bel Oiseau, Rival Hit. Gold Rod. Pen. Hilton, and Amiable. In the Sydney Cup list figure Royal Chief. Gladyncv. Beaulivre, and Round Up. as well I as Mosaic, Sir Regent. Yours Truly, High. Caste, Rival Hit, Own Folk. Ela-1 nage. and Pantoon. Cut-Throat Tactics. Boaform and Sparkle wonl out in the President's Handicap al Gore on Monday to cut each other down. with the result that they both stopped to a walk, and Wild Career, who had been trailing them, ran past them to win comfortably. Duke of Gloucester Cup. Although the King’s Cup has been dropped in Australia during the war , years, the Duke of Gloucester Cup will be run as usual in the Dominion. ; There is a difference between the two races, as the trophy for the King’s Cup is donated each year by his Majesty, whereas the Duke of Gloucester Cup is a permanent trophy, with the : miniatures provided each year by the ( club staging the race. The next con- ( test for the Duke of Gloucester Cup • will bo held by the South. Canterbury .Jockey Club at one of its meetings l
next season. This season’s race was conducted by the Combined Hunt Clubs at their meeting last September, and it was won by Windsor Chief.. The event has now been established for five years, and the other clubs which have run the race are the Marton Jockey Club (won by Royal Papa). Canterbury Jockey Club (won by Shy), Hawke's .Bay Jockey by Soho), and Dunedin Jockey Club (won by Travenna).
