The captain of the local fire brigade entered the Pig and Whistle and ordered a half-pint of beer. The landlady looked at him in astonishment, for she had never known him order less than a pint. Doubting whether she had heard aright, she said: “Did you say half a pint, captain?” “Yes,” replied the fireman. “I know it’s unusual, but I haven't time for a pint. I'm on my way to a fire.”
