Car Destroyed by Fire.

On Saturday evening Mr Geo Wainwright, of Masterton, was returning to Masterton in his motor car and when near the Waingawa bridge engine trouble developed. He ran the car to the side of the road and obtained a lift into Masterton in a motor lorry. When he returned to the car yesterday morning he was surprised to’find that the car had. been destroyed by fire. It is thought that a short circuit to the battery was the cause of the fire.

Changeable Weather. A very cold change in the weather was experienced in the Wairarapa over the week-end. The sky was overcast and threatening on Saturday morning, and scattered showers heralded a rapid change in temperatures. On Saturday afternoon the wind swung round to the south, bringing intermittent showers of heavy rain. Many local residents resorted to the use of fires over the weekend. The foothills of the ranges received a very light coating of snow, which, however, soon melted. Yesterday the weather was fine. Yachts in Trouble.

The sudden change in the wind from a light northerly to a strong south westerly caught yatchsmen unprepared on Saturday afternoon, and many skippers had considerable trouble in sailing their boats back to their berths without capsizing. Unique, an Idle Along from the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club, capsized and was later wrecked near Ngahauranga, and another Port Nicholson Yacht Club Idle Along, Toroa, also capsized, but was towed back to the boat harbour safely. Tlie crew of Unique wore rescued immediately after their craft capsized.
