BRILLIANT PLAY UNDER IMPROVED CONDITIONS. AUSTRALIANS IN GOOD FORM. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Greatly improved weather enabled competitors in the New Zealand lawn tennis championship tournament at Miramar yesterday to give of their best and much brilliant play was seen. Four players now remain in the men’s singles event, the Australians J. H. Crawford and J. Bromwich, and C. Angas (Canterbury), and R. Howe (Wellington). Crawford and Angas and Bromwich and Howe will meet in the semi-finals today. In the men’s doubles Crawford and Bromwich advanced to the final round and will meet the winners of the match between N. G. Sturt and D. G. France, and A. D. Brown and Angas, The semi-finals of the women’s doubles were decided yesterday, the finalists being Misses N. Wynne and T. Coyne (Australia) and Miss M. Hardcastle (Australia) and Mrs Gallagher (Wellington). In the mixed doubles R. Barnes (Australia) and Miss P. Cooke (Auckland) and Howe and Miss M. Beverley (Waikato) have reached the semi-finals. The former pair will now meet Crawford and Miss Wynne, and the other pair Bromwich and Miss Coyne. Detailed results are:— Men’s Singles. Fourth round: J. Bromwich beat N. G. Sturt, 6/2, 6/1, 6/3; R. Tennis of a high standard was seen by large galleries at Miramar when the matches in the concluding stages of the New Zealand Centennial tennis championships were played today. The weather was fine when play began at noon but a heavy shower fell at one o’clock just when the women’s singles semi-final between Miss Wynne (Australia) and Miss M. Beverley (Waikato) wits nparing its conclusion. The other match in this semi-final was that between Miss Coyne (Australia) and Miss Hardcastle (Australia). Without reaching brilliant heights both matches nevertheless were full of interest. Results: — Women’s Singles. Semi-final: Miss Wynne (Australia) beat Miss M. Beverley, 6/3, 6/4. Men’s Plate. Semi-final: M. Ferkins beat Cant (Canterbury), 8/6, 6/9. As was expected Miss Wynne entered the final of the women’s singles by defeating Miss M. Beverley, New Zealand number 1 woman player. Miss Beverley stroked her shots as well as ' Miss Wynne but she lacked the consistency of her opponent. Miss Beverley began well with a lead of 2/0 but Miss Wynne soon got on to her game and won without being extended. A strong feature of th& Australian s game is her backhand shots which she plays with fluency and wonderful control.
