RUGBY FOOTBALL
NOT TO BE DISCONTINUED IN WAR TIME. RESTRICTED PROGRAMME. LIKELY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Any impression that Rugby football will be discontinued on account of the war is incorrect. Mr S. Dean, chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union states. There certainly will be club footbail. The game has a value for men going into training. Mr Dean gave it as his personal opinion that Ranfurly Shield matches should not be played and so far as representative matches are concerned, it is unlikely that there will be any comprehensive tours, but no doubt there will be a number of home and homo matches. To continue with the game, he said, would serve the interests of any players not eligible for war service. During the last war the game was carried on under an age limit. He considered this a mistake. For various reasons, footballers of military age would not be with the forces. Any amount would be in reserved occupations. It would be a mistake to deprive them of their football. Adding that he was strongly in favour of conscription. Mr Dean said (his was the easiest way of avoiding any heartburnings, and he thought the sooner it was brought in Ihe belt er.
