STATE THEATRE

A BRILLIANT PRODUCTION. The large audience at the State Theatre last night thoroughly enjoyed one of the most brilliant pictures ever seen at that popular resort of particular picture patrons when “Intermezzo, A Love Story” was presented to them. The picture immediately appealed to those present for its high class production and acting. Ingrid Bergman, the beautiful young Continental actress, is introduced to audiences for the first time in this new David O. Selznick production, in which she is co-starred with Leslie Howard in his first picture since “Pygmalion,” and Edna Best. This new picture is a dramatic love story set in modern-day Europe. Miss Bergman, a beauteous blonde ' with well-chiselled features, plays the role of the other woman. The story, briefly told, concerns a world-famous violinist who returns home to Stockholm to rejoin his wife and two children after a two years’ absence during which he became the sensation of Europe. Hoping to settle down to a quiet existence and to renew acquaintance with his family, he finds himself restless and anxious for a life of youth and gaiety. He urges his wife to accompany him on a second honeymoon to the romantic places which he visited on tour, but she explains that her roots are in hei’ home and that her children need her love and guidance. When he meets the lovely young pianist who teaches his daughter, he is strangely attracted to her. He cannot resist her charms, and he goes off on another tour with her, leaving his family behind. How their affair finally winds up provides the film with an exciting and unexpected climax. Among the thirty large sets constructed for the production were a quaint seaport village on the coast of France, a beautiful Swedish mansion fit for the gracious life led by a world-famous musician, a Swedish street cafe and many other ■ interesting inns found in resort cities. Mr Selznick assembled a cast of im- : portant names to surround the trio of ■ stars who play the leading roles in “Intermezzo, A Love Story.” Featur- ; ed in the .supporting roles are John : Halliday, Cecil Kellaway, Enid Bennett and Eleanor Wesselhoeft.

The supporting programme contains another of that outstanding “March of Time” series, as well as several pictures much above the average, abounding in interest, instruction and enjoyment, the audience leaving the theatre well pleased with the excellent bill of fare presented to them.
