GALE SWEEPS COURT

SEEDED PLAYERS BEATEN. LITTLE GOOD TENNIS SEEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. For the second day in succession a fierce wind swept the courts at Miramar yesterday. making conditions both difficult and unpleasant for the competitors in the New Zealand lawn tenuis championship tournament. Little tennis that was consistently good was seen, though some players were able to adapt themselves and showed surprising form in the circumstances. The New Zealanders accepted the conditions philosophically, but some of the Australians, to judge from their expressions and gestures, were by no means resigned. Two seeded players were beaten in the men's singles, A D Brown (Canterbury) going -out to R Howe (Wellington) in five sets and D. G. France (Wellington) to the Australian junior R. Barnes in straight sets. A seeded pair, N. G. Sturt (Auckland) and Miss M. Hardcastle (Australia) were beaten easily in the mixed doubles by Howe and Miss M. Beverley (Waikato). The feature of the day’s play was the splendid opposition provided by the young Wellington player S. Painter against J. H. Crawford (Australia) in the third round of the men’s singles. IMPROVED FORM SHOWN. WELLINGTON, This Day. After three days of high wind competitors in the New Zealand Centennial tennis championships at Miramar today welcomed greatly the improved conditions. The weather is beautifully fine and the fresh northerly wind did not worry the players who showed all-round better form. Play did not commence until midday. The finals of the men’s and women’s championship doubles will be played tomorrow afternoon and the finals of the other championship events on Monday. Today’s results arc:— COMBINED DOUBLES.
