HOW TO MAKE A LAWN

- USEFUL HINTS. When a site has been chosen for the lawn, the first thing to do is to see that the ground is thoroughly drained. After this has been attended to, the land must be deeply and evenly trenched. The next point of importance is to rake the surface, well until it is very fine. It must be well trodden .down oi’ rolled, and, as portions sink, the hollows should be firmly filled and rolled until the surface is quite . level. The ground is now ready for sowing. Lightly rake the surface and then sow the seed broadcast, as evenly as possible, and then lightly roll. When the grass is well established, it must be often cut and rolled. To keep a lawn in good condition an annual dressing of manure should be given, and if this is done very little will be required in the way of renovation, for if a lew seeds be sown each year wherever the turf shows a tendency to become bare, a frosh, even verdure will be maintained. Lawns from seed can only be successfully produced by the use of properly balanced mixtures of the right sorts of grasses according to the purpose for which they are required. The expense and trouble of preparing the site may easily be thrown away if care is not taken to sow suitable seeds. It is necessary to get the surface of the soi jin as perfect condition as possible before sowing the seed, and when weather conditions are likely to encourage quick germination and after-growth. The best time to sow is March to April, and again from August to October. Feeds required: 2Jlbs will sow 50 square yards; lOlbs will sow 200 square yards; 251bs will sow 450 square yards; 351bs will sow 1-acre; 701bs will sow 1-acre; 1401bs will sow 1-acre. I
