A correspondent to a recent issue of “John o' London’s Weekly" points out that 1939 marked the centenary of the first law forbidding the use of draught dogs in England. At first, the lawapplied only io (hi 1 metropolitan area of London, but within 20 years it was extended to the whole of England and Wales. In debate in Parliament it was asserted that in Sussex and Hampshire alone (hero were 1.500 drivers of dog carts. Draught dogs were much used by sneak thieves, and some of the animals were treated very cruelly. But in Belgium dogs tire to this day employed to haul loads up to 3001 b tone dog) and 4001 b (two dogs), and they look happy and well cared for.
