FIGHTING CONTINUES
BATTLE ON MANNERHEIM LINE
Heavy Losses Inflicted on Enemy The battle on Ilie Mannerheim Line still continues, .states a Daventry broadcast this morning. The Russians are attacking in several places. The Finns claim to have put twenty Russian tanks out of action, tn fighting in the Finnish waist-line area, the Russians are also reported to have suffered heavy losses, 1500 men having been killed in the past six days. Russian air attacks yesterday were less severe. A few places in Ihc north were attacked but only slight damage was done and one person killed.
A Finnish communique announces the repulse of Russian onslaughts on Pitkaranta and the coast with loss of several hundred men.
The Russians bombed Kajano and Kasku from the air, killing two persons and injuring several, besides dropping men by parachute in north Finland. Fifty parachutists are reported to have been' killed after a sharp engagement. A Russian communique cites patrol activity, minor artillery duels, infantry skirmishes, and aeroplane reconnaissances.
Latest reports from Finland indicate that the Russian air force has transferred its activities to the northern front. Squadron after squadron has been seen passing northward.
A town at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia was the main objective of a heavy bombardment by Russian aeroplanes.
The report that the Russians northeast of Lake Ladoga are in retreat and the 18th Russian division has been virtually wiped out has not been confirmed by the Finnish command, and it is suggested that the Finns will refrain from reporting the victory till the remnants of the Russian division are destroyed. Finnish aircraft bombed Russian troops in camp and made reconnaissance flights.
However, it is yet again reported that in this area the Russians are virtually in retreat. Aeronautical experts agree that the inequality between the Finnish and Soviet air strength is being diminished.
Though the Soviet still has the numerical strength, the Finns have the technical advantage because they are using more up-to-date bombers and fighters.—By radio.
