BOROUGH WORK

TAR SEALING OPERATIONS. THE COLE STREET CULVERT. The borough engineer. Mr C. R. Mabson, stated this morning that in con-, nection with general work that was being carried out in the borough, good progress was being made with the metalling and preparing for tar sealing o. Bennington Street (leading from College Street to Master’s Crescent) in the Government housing block. and other streets in that area.

In regard to the work on a bridge about half way up Cole Street. Mi Mabson stated that the bearers and decking, which of Australian gum and hardwood, had rotted away in places to such an extent that had. • for example, a petrol waggon gone over at either side, it would fallen through. In the centre of the bridge, however, the crust of the road held the decking together. The engineer stated that in his opinion the bridge, which was built in 1906, had not stood up to the passage of time as it should have. Men were working on the job. and as the materials had been gathered together somi time ago, it was being proceeded with as fast as possible.
