PLAY AT MIRAMAR
STOPPED DY RAIN YESTERDAY. ANGAS IN SPLENDID FORM. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Rain interfered seriously with the scheduled programme for the second day of the New Zealand lawn tennis championships at Miramar yesterday. Seven matches were completed and another left unfinished with the score! set all. The Australians. J. H. Crawford and J. Bromwich and Misses N. Wynne, T. Coyne and M. Hardcastle did not play. They arrived at the courts early in the afternoon, but the rain, which finally stopped play at about 1 p.m.. did not cease and shortly before 3 o’clock it was officially decided to abandon play for the day. C. Angas (Canterbury) played his first match of the tournament against R. McL. Ferkins (Wellington), and showed himself to be in splendid form, winning in straight sets and taking the second to love. Ferkins played very well, but could not match his opponent in any department. Angas hit hard and accurately, both on the forehand and the backhand, and volleyed with great confidence. Detailed results are: —

Edwards and Mrs Hatherley, 5-7, 10-8 (unfinished). TODAY’S PLAY FIRST APPEARANCE OF AUSTRALIANS. CRAWFORD BEATS DYER. WELLINGTON. This Day. Interest in the New Zealand Centennial tennis championships centred this morning on the first appearance of the Australian players and a goodsized gallery watched the singles matches between Crawford and Dyer and Bromwich and Renouf. As expected the Davis Cup players won in straight sets but they were troubled by a high north wind and did not produce their best form.
Driving with fluency and fine control on both hands, Crawford won the first set of the match against Dyer without exerting himself, although a number of games ran to deuce. The wind increased as the match advanced, troubling Crawford, who lost many points through netting and outing. Dyer covered the court remarkably well and returned many of Crawford's sharply angled placements which looked like winners. The Wellington player was at his best in the third set. and his strong driving, combined with Crawford’s inability to handle the windy conditions as well as his opponent resulted in the set being very evenly contested.
