FRENCH DEFENCES
MAGINOT LINE TREBLED EXPENDITURE OF £600,000,000. STRENGTH OF FORTIFICATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day. .12.40 p.m.) LONDON, February 6. A member of the French military mission told the Australian. Associated Press that the Allies’ fatalities on the Western Front was 1.500 prior to January 31. The French losses in the first five months of the last war were 720.000. He added that the inactivity on the Western Front enabled the Maginot Line to be enormously strengthened. It now actually consisted of three lines. The expenditure on the Maginot Line was £600.000.000. The fortifications are capable of withstanding guns and shells a century ahead of anything existing today. The French Army totals at present, approximately 6.500.000—a quarter of the male population. An example of the all-em-bracing nature of the army was the fact that there were twenty-eight thousand priests and clergymen either in the ranks or as officers.
